The cycle of addiction usually goes like this: Trigger -> Action -> Orgasm -> SHAME.

That shame is heavy. You might think, "I've done this too many times. I promised God I would stop, and I did it again. I'm a hypocrite. He's done with me."

Here is the truth: God's ability to forgive is infinitely stronger than your ability to sin.

The "70 Times 7" Principle

Peter asked Jesus, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times." (Matthew 18:21-22).

If Jesus expects imperfect humans to forgive unlimited times, how much more will a perfect God forgive you?

Shame vs. Conviction

There is a difference between Shame (from the Enemy) and Conviction (from the Holy Spirit).

  • Shame says: "You are a bad person. You are disgusting. Give up." -> Leads to hiding and more relapse.
  • Conviction says: "This action is hurting you. You are made for more than this. Come back." -> Leads to repentance and change.

If you feel like garbage and want to hide, that's shame. God doesn't want you to hide; He wants you to come to Him to get cleaned up.

The King David Example

King David—a "man after God's own heart"—committed adultery and then murder to cover it up. That is objectively worse than what you did last night. Yet, when David repented (Psalm 51), God forgave him. He didn't lose his salvation. He faced consequences, yes, but he was restored.

How to Accept Forgiveness

  1. Stop Bargaining: Don't say "God if you forgive me, I promise I'll never do it again." You can't promise that yet.
  2. Confess Honestly: Just say, "God, I did it again. I am weak. I can't fix this on my own. I need Your strength."
  3. Get Up: The worst thing you can do is wallow. Proverbs 24:16 says, "For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again."

The definition of a righteous person isn't someone who never falls. It's someone who keeps getting back up. God hasn't given up on you. Don't give up on yourself.
